Here are the Frenquently Asked Questions in regards to the Driving Classes necessary to obtain the Class 5 Driving License in Quebec
1. At what age can you begin your Driving course?

You may begin your driving course at the age of 15, though it is recommended not to start until at most 2 months before your 16th birthday.

To obtain a Class 5 licence, you must:

  • be at least 16 years of age
  • have the consent of your father, mother or legal guardian, if you are under age 18

2. How many hours of theory and how many hours of driving are in the Driving Program?
There are 24 hours of theory (12 classes of 2 hours each) and 15 hours of in-car driving lessons.
3. Are theory classes done in person or online?
Theory classes for the Driving Program are done online by Zoom.
4. How long does it take to get a learner's permit?
The first phase of the driving program is once a week for 5 weeks. At the fifth week a test is done. If passed, the student is given an attestation form stating the completion of phase 1 and has passed their test. With this attestation form the student can go to the SAAQ to obtain their learner's permit.
5. How long does it take to get a driver's license?
The SAAQ Driving course takes 13 months to complete. You can do your driving exam to obtain your driver's license after one year of having your learner's permit and fully completing the Driving Program.
6. How much does it cost?
The cost of the driving course, regulated by the SAAQ, is $1024 plus tax.
7. How long does it take to get a learner's permit?

8. While having a learner's permit, can I drive by myself?
The Class 5 learner’s licence gives you access to the road network provided you are accompanied by a driving school monitor or an accompanying rider. An accompanying rider is a person who has held a valid Québec driver’s licence of the appropriate class for at least 2 years, and who is qualified to provide you with help and advice.
9. How many demerit points do I have with a learner's permit?
You have a threshold of 4 demerit points. If you accumulate 4 points, your learner's licence will be suspended for 90 days, and if you are found guilty of an offence under the Highway Safety Code, your licence will be revoked for a minimum period of 3 months, and you will be fined for the offences you have committed.
